June 13, 2011 Holiday in the Philippines? Probably not

June 13, 2011 Holiday has been anticipated by many who are still used to the "holiday economics" policy started by the previous administration wherein holidays were moved on dates closer to a weekend. However, the said policy had long been junked by PNoy through the Proclamation No. 84 which mandates that "all holidays be observed on the day they actually fall instead of being moved to the nearest Monday for longer weekends as was the practice under the Arroyo administration."

Many may also got confused since the Palace declared June 20, 2011 as the holiday for Jose Rizal's birthday on June 19. But this is another story since we are celebrating Rizal's 150th this year which the National Historical Commission of the Philippines found to be a special year and so they requested the holiday to be moved on June 20th so that many could join their activities.

The Independence Day on June 12 falls on a Sunday. And probably, there will be no June 13 (Monday) holiday s…

“We reviewed the scrapbook again and Jolina was surprised when she got to the last three pages. On the first two pages, I wrote my messages to her and on the third page may picture ng kamay ko na hawak ko ‘yung ring. Then, I closed the scrapbook and underneath it, I had on my hand the ring. By this time, we were already crying. I knelt down and said, ‘Mahal, will you marry me?’” …

Dragon Fruit farmer wins Php100,000 from Malacanang

Dragon Fruit displayed at a market stall

Dragon fruit or "pitaya" is relatively unknown to many Filipinos. But this pink fruit has made a 66 year-old lady from Ilocos Norte 100,000 pesos richer after the Malacanang awarded her the sum for being the "Most Outstanding High-Value Commercial Crop Farmer" of 2011.

She and her family then thought of going large-scale after consulting government research agencies which resulted to the first organic dragon fruit plantation in Northern Philippines.

In 2009, the family farm, which is now about 10 hectares and expanding, yielded a total net income of P21 million from dragon fruit production.
